why I'm fascinated by burnout and the job search (and how they're connected)
I've been fascinated by burnout and the job search since before I became a coach.
I saw how burnout drastically affects lives. How it harms families. How even parents who love their jobs can get into the trap and have little for their kids. How burnout makes people physically sick. We can work ourselves to the bone, and for what? It's so easy in this hustle culture to over-give. There's this expectation of excellence, of being able to carry it all yourself. 55% of Americans report being burnout (Eagle Hill 2025). It affects your efficiency at work. And we know that chronic stress takes an incredible toll on your body. I saw it in myself too - and it freaked me out. I knew there was another way to live.
What was most fascinating is that burnout happened for me regardless of the circumstance (I see this all the time). I could work 90 hours/week or 20 hours/week and still feel burnout. I felt it in every job. In my relationships. And I realized it's a brain habit. It's what our brains get comfortable with - and our brains try their best to keep us in that comfortable zone (even if it's really uncomfortable). Enter my research into burnout and how to help us heal that brain habit. After 7 years of working in this realm with clients, I created my audio course: The Burnout Protocol. Easy simple 1% shifts that move the needle so you can feel better.
But it all started with the job search. I've been laid off twice. Once two weeks before my wedding. It was rough. And it left me job searching for a lot longer than I planned. I felt dejected, lost, frustrated. The job search felt like a big black box. I was sending resumes out into the void and getting no traction. I finally landed a job I knew I'd hate, but I took anyway because I felt desperate. Honestly it worked out. It gave me mental space to start learning about professional development - it all started listening to podcasts in my cubical while doing data entry.
So when I was ready to find my next role, I landed THE job I truly wanted in 27 days. It felt like magic.
It's why I'm so passionate about helping people find and land the jobs they want too. Because the job search can be really simple and easy. That's why I created my audio course: Expedite Your Job Search. Even during the heat of covid companies would hire me to work with their laid off employees as a part of their severance - so they could land faster (and the companies would be on the hook for less unemployment).
