five questions to ask to decide if your job is right for you
How do we know if the job we're in isn't right for us?
Because sometimes it's not that obvious.
Looking back, it wasn't always obvious to me either. Even when I was crying almost every day after work. Because to me in that moment, I was just doing my job. I was good at it. I got good feedback. Clients were asking for me. And that feels really good.
But I also was struggling. I didn't enjoy what I was doing. I felt like a pawn, being used a lot of the time. I felt on edge with people on my team. I wasn't a good personality fit. I worked a ton and felt isolated in my role. I was constantly worrying about what other people thought and felt like I had to prove myself at every turn. I was stressed out.
Does any of that sound familiar?
If it does, I have just 5 questions for you.
1. Why are you in this job? (Did it fall in your lap, did you choose it, did you parents choose it, are you there only for the money?)
2. Are you growing and learning? (personally & professionally)
3. Do you feel you're adding value to the company? And is the job adding value to your life?
4. How do you feel about the job daily? (happy, sad, bored, stressed, overwhelmed, excited, empowered, small, confident, maybe a roller coaster of emotions?)
5. Is that how you want to feel about it?
These aren't always easy or fun questions to ask, but it's important to check in. Not every job will be right for us. Not every company will be right for us. And we can't be right for every job or company. And the life stage that we're in impacts our job satisfaction too.
So it's not bad if we realize we're in a job that isn't right for us. All we need to do now is figure out what we want to do next.
And if you want support or need help, let me know. I'm here for you always!
