don't let life pass you by

I don’t know how you feel, but sometimes I get caught up in my life. What’s happening, how I’m feeling. Who or what I’m worrying about. I can get wrapped up. And before I know it, I feel like the world is passing me by. We have time to wake up, work, come home, eat dinner, relax in front of the TV and go to bed. Only to do it day in and day out. All over again.

How do you break out of that place if you feel like you can’t just take a day off or quit your job? I think one of the easiest solutions for me has been gratitude. In the words of Ferris Bueller, "life moves pretty fast. If you don't stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it."

Sure, we might have a busy day. But can we notice the sunshine and be thankful it’s not raining? Or can we give ourselves a minute to really appreciate the positive feedback we just got from our boss? Can we appreciate all the little things- our comfy bed, clean running water, food in our fridge, a great cup of coffee, comfy clothes to wear, shoes on our feet, our lungs breathing in and out.

Gratitude changed my life. Going throughout the day, looking for things to be grateful for – it makes me look for the good things. And it helps me not get caught up in the bad. Maybe that meeting I just had was awful. But it could have been worse and I’m thankful that I had the opportunity to get to know the people in the room a bit more. And I learned something that will help me next time.

Sometimes it can be hard to be grateful. Sometimes life throws icky or awful things our way. But in those instances, can we look for what we can take away from the situation? What can we learn from this hard time? Maybe it’s appreciating the time we had with a person we’ve loved and lost. Maybe it’s being thankful for practicing the art of confrontation. Maybe it’s an opportunity to think about what we really want. Maybe it’s a push to go after our dream.

Gratitude doesn’t have to be big. It can be the small minute things. Like my car starting in the morning (even though it does every morning). Or maybe it’s an easy commute to work. Or a smile from a coworker or friend. Personally, I’m always thankful for the sunshine.

So what are you thankful for today? I’d love to hear about it!
