Caye Caulker, Belize
barefoot, laidback & friendly
We loved staying on the island of Caye Caulker, Belize. Here it’s truly no shoes, no shirt, no problem. We ate at restaurants in our bathing suits. It was very laid back and chill. Everyone is super kind and open. We had great conversations with restaurant owners and other guests. Would totally recommend.
Before you go - it’s an island so getting there takes an extra step. We flew into Belize City and then took a taxi to the 45 minute ride ferry. Pretty easy. You can also fly into the island.
Also something to check - It’s so laid back that when we went, I couldn’t even book our snorkeling trip until we were on the island - they booked based on the weather for the day. So if you go and want to snorkel (and you should, it was amazing - turtles, stingrays, sharks, the works!), give yourself some flexibility and a few days as options to do it. Of course, double check, but doing it this way worked well for us.
Some hot spots we loved -
- Lazy Lizard - don’t miss the Lazy Lizard! A bar at the end of the island. It was so fun. They have tables in the ocean and a high dive if you’re feeling adventurous (it was so fun!). Great spot to watch the sunset.
- Watermelon juice from a stand - I still daydream about this juice! Don’t be afraid to get one - our snorkel guide shared his favorite spot and it was amazing!
We also booked a jungle tour which did not disappoint! We had to go back to the Belizean mainland for the day but it was so worth it. The culture, the way the people work with and learn from the jungle was so cool! I still remember a lot of the facts we learned and we went in 2018 - it was riveting! Like there’s a type of ant that the indigenous people would have used as a staples/stitches alternative when they were hurt - and they’d get the ants to attach to their skin and then lop their bodies off. When the head (and pincers) naturally fell off the persons body, their cut/injury would have already healed. So cool to this bio nerd!
